The latest data from the Corporate Knights Sustainable Economy Intelligence (CKSEI) database shows how the hundreds of billions of dollars of sustainable revenue earned within the last year break down by economic sector.

  • Green products, which, per the Corporate Knights taxonomy, includes equipment, appliances, consumer and food products, and apparel, brought in the most revenue at nearly $400 billion.
  • Renewable energy, which includes products and services that support the production of sustainable energy, such as renewable electricity, solar thermal, or energy storage, came in second with $236.5 billion in revenue.
  • Vehicles, a category that includes vehicles powered by electricity, sustainable biofuels, green hydrogen or human power, narrowly trailed renewable energy with $208 billion.
  • Telecommunications, information technologies and media, which includes products and infrastructure for providing connectivity and access, or greening supply chains, as well as media that promotes themes of environmentalism or sustainability, earned $97 billion.
  • Low emission primary production, which covers steel, cement, mining, industrial chemicals, forestry and agriculture, earned $49.5 billion in sustainable revenue.

The CKSEI database follows the money to identify companies leading the transition to a low-carbon economy. It maps revenue and investments against the Corporate Knights Sustainable Economy Taxonomy (CKSET). CKSET is a leading-edge taxonomy for measuring corporate contributions to the sustainability transition and provides a global standard to aid in the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. It identifies and quantifies revenue and investments (capital expenditure, research & development, and acquisitions) aligned with sustainable practices, all while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
